Common and Preferred Shares
Common shares come with certain rights and privileges of ownership. Common share holders have the right to vote in company matters. A common share - gives you the right to vote for the company’s board of directors and top officers. Depending on how well the company does the board may or may not elect to pay out dividends on the common shares. A company may also sell Preferred Shares, which allow no voting rights, but quite often have guaranteed dividends attached. The biggest risk with owning stock is owning -- just one.
